Amethyst, the rich purple variety of quartz, was once so rare that it was classified as one of the precious gems. This gemstone can be found in many hues of purple ranging from light lavender to royal purple. The highest quality amethysts are deep purple.
The large deposits of amethyst were discovered in Brazil in the 19th century. Today the finest amethyst comes from Zambia in Africa.
